Lise Thibault’s fraud trial postponed to Sept. 2 after ex-lieutenant-governor of Quebec suffers epileptic fit

QUEBEC — The fraud trial against Quebec’s former lieutenant-governor Lise Thibault had to be suspended Friday after Thibault suffered an epileptic attack overnight.

Thibault’s lawyer, Marc Labelle, advised the court of her inability to be cross-examined.

The judge agreed to put off the trial until Sept. 2. There are four more days of testimony scheduled to take place at the courthouse in Quebec City.

Thibault, who held the provincial viceregal post between 1997 and 2007, is on trial on charges of fraud and breach of trust in connection with more than $700,000 in alleged improper expenses.

Thibault suffered several setbacks this week as the trial began. On Monday, a Quebec Court judge quashed her attempt to have the trial dismissed, ruling that she was not entitled to royal immunity.

Then on Thursday, Thibault faced a tough day of questioning as Crown prosecutor Marcel Guimond grilled her about her expenses.
